Running Pace Calculator

Find your pace per mile or kilometer, average speed and estimated finish times for popular race distances.

Calculate your running pace

Enter a distance and finish time from a run or race.

Average pace6:00 min/km
Pace per mile9:39 /mi
Average speed10.0 km/h
Total time30:00

Race predictions are estimates and not guarantees.

Predicted race finish times

These projections assume comparable fitness and conditions.

Predictions use a common distance-based model; they may be less accurate when predicting between very different race distances or for new runners.

How to use a running pace calculator

🏁 Enter a known effort

Use a recent run or race where you know the distance and elapsed time. Moving time can differ from total elapsed time if you stopped during the activity.

📏 Choose the correct distance unit

US runners may prefer miles, while many race events display kilometers. The calculator converts units so the pace result is comparable across both systems.

⏱️ Read pace and speed separately

Pace describes the time required to cover one unit of distance, such as 6:00 per kilometer. Speed describes distance covered per hour, such as 10 km/h.

🎯 Use predictions as a guide

Finish-time estimates can help with broad goal-setting, but heat, elevation, course surface, pacing, hydration and training specificity affect real race performance.

What is running pace?

Running pace is the amount of time it takes to cover a unit of distance. For example, a pace of 6 minutes per kilometer means each kilometer takes about six minutes at a steady effort. A pace of 10 minutes per mile describes a different distance unit, so always check the unit shown next to your result.

The calculator converts your entered distance to kilometers and miles, calculates average pace and speed, and estimates finishing times for common events. The calculation assumes a constant average pace for the completed distance; it does not measure effort, heart rate, elevation or running economy.

Running pace formula

Pace = total elapsed time ÷ distance. To calculate speed, divide distance by time. For a worked example, a 5K completed in 30 minutes has a pace of 30 ÷ 5 = 6 minutes per kilometer and an average speed of 10 km/h.

Why pace can change during a run

Most runners do not maintain exactly the same pace throughout an activity. Hills, turns, traffic, weather, fatigue and intentional interval sessions can all change split times. A single average is useful for summary comparisons, but lap or kilometer splits provide more detail about pacing strategy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate pace per mile?

Convert the distance to miles and divide total time by the number of miles. If you ran 3 miles in 30 minutes, the average pace is 10 minutes per mile.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is usually expressed as minutes per mile or kilometer. Speed is expressed as miles per hour or kilometers per hour. Faster running means a lower time-per-distance pace but a higher speed.

Can this calculator predict a marathon time from a 5K?

It can produce a mathematical estimate, but a short race does not perfectly predict marathon readiness. Endurance training, fueling, pacing experience and weekly mileage strongly influence marathon performance.

Should I include pauses during my run?

Use elapsed time if you want the overall time from start to finish. Use moving time if you want the pace while moving. Be consistent when comparing sessions.

Is the predicted finish time guaranteed?

No. Predictions are statistical estimates. They cannot account for your current training, course conditions, health, weather or race-day decisions.

Training note: Increase training gradually, allow recovery and adapt goals to your experience and health. Stop exercising if you experience concerning symptoms and seek appropriate medical advice.
